Kelly, Shweisky Lead USA U-21 Squad To Top 4 Finish, Bring Strong Experience Into 2019 Season
September 11, 2018 | Men's Volleyball
Sophomore Joe Kelly already had a strong foundation of experience to build on for his 2019 season; after all, he led Princeton to an EIVA championship match as the starting freshman setter. Both he and head coach Sam Shweisky added to that foundation over the summer, when they helped lead Team USA to a Top-4 finish at the 2018 NORCECA U-21 Continental Championship.
Kelly earned a spot on the roster as a setter, while Shweisky served as assistant coach following two years as the USA Youth National Team head coach. The duo helped the USA earn a 3-2 record in Cuba.
"Being able to represent USA Volleyball is always an incredible honor," Shweisky said. "Getting a chance to return to Cuba two years after being there with the U-19 group was a great opportunity to connect with many of the Cuban Volleyball Federation officials we had become friendly with from our trip in 2016. The additions of very strong Canadian and Dominican Republic teams made this the deepest and most talented NORCECA event I have ever attended. Thank you to USA Volleyball for this amazing experience."
Shewisky and Kelly can now turn their attention on the 2019 season, when Princeton will return six starters from its 2018 EIVA finalist squad. The Tigers will open their season Dec. 30 at Pepperdine, and will play several Top-15 programs prior to opening their EIVA season.
