Strong Start Powers Princeton Past Cal Baptist; Sunday Slate Includes Showdown vs #1 UCLA
September 08, 2018 | Men's Water Polo
A five-goal first quarter, which included a trio of scores by senior Matt Payne, led the Princeton men's water polo team to a hard-fought 11-9 victory over Cal Baptist Saturday morning during the middle day of the Princeton Invitational.
Payne scored Princeton's first two goals, then added a third after the Lancers' first goal of the game, to ensure the Tigers had a solid lead early. Payne added three more goals, including two in the final quarter, to help fight off a comeback attempt by Cal Baptist, which cut the deficit to two goals three times in the final quarter. Payne's lone score in the third quarter was significant as well, as it ended a 4-0 run by the Lancers.
Five other Princeton players scored at least one goal, including Wyatt Benson, who scored a team-best six goals during Princeton's pair of Friday games. The weekend concludes for the home team Sunday with a pair of games, including a 7:30 am opener against Air Force. Following that game, the Tigers will turn their attention to the top-ranked program in the country, as Princeton will host #1 UCLA at 12:30 pm. Both games can be seen live on ESPN+.
