Streaking Tigers Look To Continue Upward Trend During 2019 CSA Team Championships Weekend
February 13, 2019 | Men's Squash
CSA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET
With only three matches remaining in the season, the Princeton men's squash team took an honest look at its position and knew it little margin for error if it hoped to return to the main draw for the CSA Championship weekend. Despite playing two higher-ranked teams over the final eight days of the season, the Tigers knew their position was a tenuous one, and it demanded a strong finish.
What a strong finish it was.
Princeton knocked off both #6 Dartmouth and #5 Columbia in consecutive upsets, and then fought off an upset-seeking Cornell squad in the finale, to clinch a berth in the team championships and actually move up one place in the rankings. The Tigers will enter this weekend's tournament, held Friday through Sunday at Yale, as the seventh seed, and they will open Friday at 1 pm against second-seeded Rochester. The Yellow Jackets won a December meeting 8-1 in Rochester, and their only loss of the season came by a 7-2 score against top-seeded Harvard late last month.
Princeton has become a far different team over the last month, and it has gotten clutch victories up and down the lineup. Junior Adhitya Raghavan, who earned national attention with his 3-2 win over Penn's Andrew Douglas last month, earned the clinching win over Cornell on Sunday, while junior tri-captain Gabriel Morgan had the finishing win in the 5-4 upset of Columbia. Freshmen Daelum Mawji and Howe Cheng both had critical individual wins as they head into their postseason debuts, while sophomore Alex Engstrom and Henry Parkhurst both went 3-0 in the final Princeton surge.
If the Tigers were to pull off their biggest upset Friday, they would find themselves in the CSA semifinal for the first time since 2013 and would play the winner of the Trinity-Columbia match Saturday at 3 pm. If Rochester advances, the Tigers would move to the consolation draw and play the loser of the Trinity-Columbia match Saturday at 11. Each team will play three matches, so you can check GoPrincetonTigers.com Saturday to find out when and who Princeton plays Sunday.
