As National Girls And Women In Sports Day Approaches, Mollie Marcoux Samaan Speaks On Her Own Experience
February 08, 2019 | General
Before National Girls and Women In Sports Day comes to Princeton, Mollie Marcoux Samaan went to National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
Marcoux Samaan, the Ford Family Director of Athletics, spoke earlier this week at Madison Square Garden prior to a New York Rangers game as part of a panel discussion of leading women in sports around NGWSD. As one of the best female athletes in Princeton history and now the first female Director of Athletics at the University, Marcoux Samaan has seen first-hand the benefits of athletic competition for girls and women on all levels.
""From the minute I knew what sports were, I wanted to play. Any success that I have had in my life I attribute it to my participation in Athletics and the skills I learned playing those sports," Marcoux Samaan, an All-Ivy League selection in both soccer and ice hockey as a Princeton undergrad, said during the panel discussion. "I love being on a team. When I stopped playing sports, that is when I realized what drove me in life. Every business experience I have had, I made into a game and a game I am trying to win. The only thing I want to do in life is be on a team. Whether it is the leader or just a team member, whatever role it is, I want to win for the sake of the team. Do your role as best as you can and be a member of a team."
Marcoux Samaan was joined on the panel by Hannah Brandt (US women's hockey Olympic gold medalist), Jenny Storms (CMO, NBCSports), Angela James (Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee), Kimberly Davis (Executive VP NHL) and the evening's host Kathryn Tappen Sportscaster, NBCSports).
""What I have noticed since coming back to Princeton 25 years later is the tremendous skill and talent of our female athletes," Marcoux Samaan said. "Female sports have grown exponentially in the past 30 years, and I see that every single day at Princeton University. Culture within an organization is everything. If you approach your job like you would if you were on a sports team, you will be successful. If you have the right culture and the right relationships and value your team, you will be very successful in whatever endeavor you are engaging in."
Princeton will host its own celebration of the event this weekend, with a sports clinic at 4 Saturday afternoon in Jadwin Gym prior to the women's basketball game against Brown. Tip-off for the game against Brown is at 5.
The student-athlete organized clinic will feature a wide array of activities. Also, the first 500 fans will receive a special Princeton branded "Girl Power" tee. All Princeton Kids Club members can receive free admission.
Princeton has 18 varsity teams for women. In Marcoux Samaan's four-plus years as Director of Athletics, Princeton's women's teams have combined to win 30 Ivy League championships.
