Princeton Moves On To EIVA Championship Game With 3-0 Decision Over Saint Francis
April 18, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers (16-12) advanced to their second straight EIVA Championship Game with a decisive 3-0 victory over the Saint Francis Red Flashes at Dillon Gym on Thursday evening.
It's the first time that the Tigers will played in consecutive EIVA Championship Games since 1997-98. Princeton battles Penn State on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Tigers dropped just one set to the Nittany Lions in two games this season.
In front, 6-4, Saint Francis ran off five straight points forcing Princeton to call timeout in the first set. The Tigers would close within three several times, but the Red Flashes kept the Tigers at bay, extending their advantage to seven, 18-11. Head coach Sam Shweisky's group rattled off six of seven, making Saint Francis call timeout as the home unit cut the deficit to two, 21-19. Princeton kept momentum, scoring the final five points to rally and take the first set, 25-23.
"I'm pleased with the guys' resilience," said Shweisky. "I thought we started off shaky as Saint Francis came out on fire, but we responded well in the first set and battled back.
Much like the first set, the Red Flashes began quickly with five of the first seven points, but the Tigers countered, using a 7-1 run to jump ahead, 9-6. Shweisky's squad pushed their margin to five, 14-9, making Saint Francis stop the action. The Red Flashes hovered within striking distance, but Kendall Ratter's kill cemented a two-set lead for Princeton.
In the third set, the volleyball team saw its first separation with three consecutive points, taking a 12-8 lead. Princeton put the set away with another four-point sprint, improving its margin to eight, 18-10. The Red Flashes never got closer than five the rest of the way.
Ratter led the Tigers with 11 kills while George Huhmann added eight and Parker Dixon contributed seven. Ratter and Dixon had a .500 attack percentage while Princeton finished with a .359 attack percentage as team. Joe Kelly had 27 assists in the win.
Michael Fisher had 10 kills for Saint Francis in the loss. The Red Flashes finish their season at 15-14 overall.
