Hallett Nets 100th Career Point as Princeton Outlasts Dartmouth, 14-12
April 06, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
The ball – not to mention the game and quite possibly the season – was on the turf about to get away from Princeton when Kyla Sears changed everything.
With three minutes to go in a back-and-forth game that was tied at the time, Sears picked up a very difficult loose ball and then, in the face of three defenders, threaded a perfect pass to a cutting Kathryn Hallett for what proved to be the game-winner. Nearly two minutes later, Sears assisted on Tess D'Orsi's fifth goal to seal it, and Princeton had itself a thrilling, and hugely important, 14-12 win over Dartmouth.
The victory improved the Tigers to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League and ended Dartmouth's six-game winning streak. Dartmouth also lost for the first time in four league games.
"We came up here knowing we were in for a tough game," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "It was just what we expected, two really good teams who were going at each other hard all afternoon. In the end, someone was going to have to make the game-changing play, and I'm just glad it was Kyla who did so. This was a great team win for us."
While Princeton still has more than half of its Ivy season to play, the impact of this game was going to be big either way. Had Princeton lost, it would have been two games back of Dartmouth, whereas now with the win, Princeton and Dartmouth both have one loss, while Penn is now the lone unbeaten in the league after a 9-8 win over Brown.
Princeton has won five straight Ivy League titles. The quest for a sixth came close to being derailed by the Big Green, who came from four goals down at halftime to take a 12-11 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Sears finished with two goals and five assists for a seven-point afternoon, of which three came after the Tigers trailed for the final time. First she tied it on an assist from Laura Pansini with 7:39 left and then adding the two late assists.
The game-winning goal came on a possession that seemed to be destined for a turnover when a pass to Sears started to sail over her head. At first, the best she seemed to be able to do was knock it down before it went past her, but she fought her way to the loose ball and then started to the cage. When two more defenders came to stop her, she found Hallett in between four Dartmouth players. Hallett then caught it and scored.
Dartmouth still had a chance after winning the draw, but Nonie Andersen caused a turnover that led to a yellow card against the Big Green, followed by another one 19 seconds later. Princeton was able to take the clock down to just about a minute before Sears fed D'Orsi.
Hallett finished with two goals and an assist and went over the 100-point mark for her career. Julia Haney had two goals and two assists, while Princeton also got goals from Andersen – who was everywhere – Elizabeth George and Allie Rogers.
Alex Argo had two caused turnovers, and Sam Fish made 11 saves.
Princeton is back home Wednesday to host Loyola in its final non-league game and then Harvard next Saturday on a day when the 1994 NCAA championship team will be honored on its 25th anniversary.
