Career Effort Lands George Huhmann His Seventh EIVA Player Of The Week Award
April 08, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
For All-American George Huhmann to have a career night, considering everything he has already accomplished in nearly three years at Princeton, you know something special has taken place. Last Friday's 3-2 win over Harvard, which helped Princeton clinch a share of its first EIVA regular season title, was special.
Huhmann had a career-best 28 kills in a thrilling 29-27, 17-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-13 victory over Harvard in Dillon Gym, which clinched a season sweep of the only other Ivy League men's volleyball team and helped eliminate the Crimson from postseason contention. He hit .471 in that victory, which is the third-highest hitting percentage he has had in a match this season, but that doesn't tell the full story of how efficient he was. In the other two matches he hit above .471, he took 15 swings or fewer; against the Crimson, he took a career-high 51 swings, and the Tigers needed every one of them.
"George has been our most consistent offensive weapon all season long, but it seems that when we need him the most, he is at his best," head coach Sam Shweisky said. "Playing middle blocker in the front row and opposite attacker in the back row is a lot to ask of any player, yet George find ways to get kills in every role we ask of him. We are excited to see what he can do in this final week of EIVA conference play."
This is the seventh career EIVA weekly award for Huhmann, as well as the second this season. The only player in the league to rank in the top five in both kills and hitting percentage, Huhmann also added a 12-kill effort against Sacred Heart on Saturday to clinch a share of the regular-season title.
Princeton will remain home this weekend for the final two matches of the regular season, which starts Friday at 7 pm against the only EIVA team with a win over the Tigers this season, Saint Francis. Penn State comes to Princeton for the season finale Saturday at 7 pm; a Tiger win in either match would make Princeton the host of the 2019 EIVA Championships for the first time in program history.
Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
