Baughan, Sowers Named Unanimous First-Team All-Ivy; Stevens Is Second Team
May 01, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
It's no surprise that George Baughan and Michael Sowers were named unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selections in a vote of the eight head coaches. Not after the way they dominated all season.
Â
Sowers is now three-quarters of the way to joining Chad Wiedmaier and Tom Schreiber as the only four-time first-team All-Ivy players in Princeton history. This was Baughan's first time as a first-team selection, and it's likely that it won't be his last.
Â
In addition to the two first-team picks, freshman Jake Stevens was named a second-team All-Ivy selection.
Â
Baughan was a second-team All-Ivy selection as a freshman and is now a unanimous first-team selection as a sophomore. Princeton's last unanimous first-team All-Ivy League defenseman was Chad Wiedmaier in 2011 and 2012.
Â
Baughan made a name for himself a year ago as a lockdown defender, and he became even more ferocious as a sophomore.
Â
Statistically, he is third in the Ivy League and 18 in Division I in caused turnovers, and he had one goal, one assist, 23 caused turnovers and 24 ground balls for the year. Â
Â
Sowers set the Princeton record for points in a season with 90, which is seven better than the second-place record of 83, which he set last year, and eight better than third place, which he set as a freshman. No other Princeton player has ever had more than 78 in a season.
Â
He finished his junior year with 37 goals and 53 assists, making him the first Princeton player ever with two seasons of at least 30 goals and 30 assists (only two other players have even one). His 11 points against Siena tied the Princeton single-game record.
Â
Sowers also broke the Princeton record for career points with 255, bettering the previous record of 247, set by Kevin Lowe 25 years ago. Sowers is one of two active players in Division I and one of 18 all-time with at least 100 career goals and 150 career assists.
Â
Stevens, who was a terror on the face-off wings, finished his freshman year with five goals, three assists, 60 ground balls and 11 turnovers. His 60 ground balls were the most by a Princeton freshman in 29 years, since Hall-of-Fame goalie Scott Bacigalupo was credited with 80 in 1991.
Â
Stevens also was the eighth Princeton player in the last 20 years to reach 60 ground balls in a season.
