Zach Currier Earns NLL Championship With Calgary Roughnecks
May 28, 2019 | Men's Lacrosse
College or pro, indoors or outdoors, NCAA or internationally - Zach Currier just does what Zach Currier does.
Currier, the 2017 Princeton grad, added another major championship to his resume when he helped the Calgary Roughnecks defeat the Buffalo Bandits 14-13 to win the National Lacrosse League title Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,000 at the Saddledome.
The Roughnecks scored with 58.4 seconds left in regulation to go up 13-12, only to have Buffalo tie it with 28 seconds left. The game-winner came on the second possession of overtime, from Rhys Duch, who played at Stony Brook.
The NLL title comes less than a year after Currier helped the Denver Outlaws win the Major League Lacrosse outdoor championship last summer. Currier also won a silver medal with the Canadian national team at last summer's World Championships in Israel.
Currier was his typical self in this past NLL season. If there's a ball up for grabs, odds are strong he's going to come away with it.
Playing as a defender and transition player, he was second in the league in loose balls (ground balls) with 199 and second in the league in caused turnovers with 34 in 18 games. Of the four players in the league who had 166 or more loose balls, Currier was the only one who wasn't his team's face-off man. In fact, Jeremy Thompson led the league with 208 LBs, or nine more than Currier, but he also won 263 face-offs, as opposed to one that Currier won in only five attempts.
He also scored six goals and had 16 assists.
Currier had 130 ground balls as a senior in 2017, leaving him one off the single-season program record. He also had 24 goals and 34 assists, won 57 percent of his face-offs and led the team in caused turnovers.
Currier will play for the Outlaws in the 2019 MLL season, which begins Friday.
