Shweisky Serves as Panelist For Candid Conversation on Race & Colorblindness
December 14, 2020 | Men's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Princeton University men's volleyball head coach Sam Shweisky served as a panelist for a Candid Conversation on Race & Colorblindness, hosted by the Princeton Office of Diversity & Inclusion-Campus Life on December 15.
Joined by Dr. LaTanya N. Buck, Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at Princeton, Shweisky helped lead an open discussion on personal views, experiences and understanding of race, racism and colorblindness while sharing perspectives in a conversational format and providing space for colleagues to join the discussion.
"I was so appreciative to have been invited by LaTanya for this opportunity," said Shweisky. "I hoped to model that it is ok to not have all the answers when talking about race, and it is ok to feel nervous and unsure of what to say. But that having the courage to engage in the conversation in a vulnerable way can open up the path for learning and increased empathy, which ultimately I think can help us all understand and appreciate the people in our lives that come from different backgrounds in a more rich and complete way. Trying to shift the focus from what mistake I could make by entering into uncharted territory, with what kind of increased understanding or deeper relationships could I build if I am willing to authentically jump into the discussion."
