Currier Selected With First Overall Pick In PLL Entry Draft
March 16, 2020 | Men's Lacrosse
Zach Currier, a 2017 Princeton grad who has gone on to possibly the best all-around lacrosse player in the world, was selected with the No. 1 pick of the Premiere Lacrosse League entry draft Monday night.
Currier was selected by the expansion Waterdogs of the PLL, a league that sees its franchises play in venues around the country as opposed to having a home city. The 2020 PLL season would be the second in the league's history after a very successful debut a year ago.
"We're thrilled for Zach," said Princeton head coach Matt Madalon. "He's a special athlete, and he is most definitely the kind of lacrosse player you want on your team. He is also an extraordinary young man who is a great representative of Princeton lacrosse."
The entry draft was for professional players who were not previously on PLL rosters. Currier has played his entire outdoor professional career with the Denver Outlaws of Major League Lacrosse, and he helped the Outlaws to an MLL title in 2018.
In fact, winning has followed Currier wherever he has gone, as his resume also includes a World Indoor Championship with Team Canada and a National Lacrosse League championship a year ago with the Calgary Roughnecks. That is not a coincidence, as Currier brings his intensity, tenacity and will to every possession of every game. He is a ground ball machine who can score, feed and defend, and it is his play on the face-off wings - or as the face-off specialist if necessary - and ability as a takeway force that really allow him to dominate. In the PLL, with smaller rosters and a slightly smaller field, those skills are paramount.
Currier's senior year at Princeton was among the very best any college midfielder has ever had and by far the best by any midfielder that season, with 24 goals, 34 assists, 130 ground balls, a 57 percent face-off winning percentage and the team lead for caused turnovers.
He graduated with a degree in civil engineering.
Jesse Bernhardt, a defenseman who was the defensive coordinator on Madalon's first Princeton team, was the second pick in the draft.
