For nearly two decades, the Princeton Varsity Club has helped lead "Reading With The Tigers" -- a program where Princeton student-athletes from a wide variety of Princeton's varsity teams visit local elementary schools.
"Reading With The Tigers" is now an annual event, with multiple school visits a year, Tiger student-athletes read to school children ranging in grade levels from kindergarten through fifth grade in one of their more anticipated events of the school year.
In a typical year, over 140 Princeton student-athletes participate, making over 90 classroom visits at our participating school partners -- Community Park Elementary, Johnson Park Elementary, Littlebrook Elementary, Riverside Elementary, Princeton Charter School, and Christopher Columbus Elementary (Trenton).
"Many members of Princeton Athletics have children in our area schools, so we've seen first-hand the excitement that Reading with the Tigers brings to the youth in our community." said Kellie Staples, Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Advancement. "It's always a highlight for both our student-athletes as well as the children they read to, and we were all disappointed to not be able to physically get to every school during the spring semester. We are incredibly proud of our student-athletes for remaining committed to serving the community, and finding creative ways of doing so, despite great disruptions and challenges to their own lives. They are terrific ambassadors of Princeton Athletics who continue to achieve, serve and lead during this difficult time."
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 and the resulting social distancing, Princeton's student-athletes have continued with their service efforts by setting up "eReading With The Tigers" to provide an online opportunity to engage with the students they've been visiting throughout the year, and children around the country.
"When we first heard about eReading With Tigers, we thought it was an awesome idea," said Jake Mayer '21 and Mary Murphy '21, co-Presidents of the Student-Athlete Service Council. "We understand that many parents are working hard to balance their professional commitments with the educational experiences of their children during this time. eRWT is our way, as part of the broader Princeton Community, to remain connected with younger students and keep them engaged while learning at home. And, when possible, it's an opportunity to give parents and educators a much deserved breather. We are so proud that even during crisis, Princeton student-athletes continue to serve on and off the field, whether we are on-campus or online. We are also appreciative that eRWT provides a platform for Princeton students to connect with one another--whether that be with alums who reach out after seeing us e-read, or with classmates eager to volunteer for the next online reading. eRWT allows us to build our sense of community and foster the shared values that define our student-athlete body."
