PRINCETON, N.J. – Niko Gjaja of the Princeton University men's volleyball team has been named president of the Princeton Varsity Student-Athlete Advising Committee (VSAAC) for the 2020-21 academic year.
Gjaja is appreciative of the honor and how the men's volleyball program has prepared him for the role.
"I am so thankful to have the opportunity to serve as President of VSAAC next year within Princeton Athletics," said Gjaja. "Princeton Volleyball and my coaches and teammates are the reason I am here today, and I am excited to be able to continue to advocate for them and for the student-athlete population as a whole moving forward. I can't wait to get back on campus, and I know VSAAC and our student-athletes are ready to be exceptional leaders for the University community when we are able to return."
Men's volleyball head coach Sam Shweisky is thrilled for Gjaja's opportunity and eager to see the impact he can make.
"We are so proud of Niko being nominated to this incredibly prestigious position within SAAC," proclaimed Shweisky. "Niko has always been a great voice for our program and we are so excited to see him get the opportunity to bring his talents and serve the athletic department and all student-athletes at large. Congratulations Niko, well deserved!"
VSAAC has 18-20 members, who are nominated and selected as sophomores and then serve for three years until they graduate. VSAAC enhances the student-athlete experience at Princeton by providing a student-athlete voice on athletic or academic concerns. At monthly meetings, the committee works with Princeton Athletics administration to:
• strengthen communication between student-athletes, administration, and faculty
• provide perspective on proposed Ivy League and NCAA legislation
• have a student-athlete presence on campus committees
• advise on issues that affect the health and welfare of all student-athletes
• foster community relations through projects and experiences for student-athletes
• generate support and school spirit from the university community
• encourage inter-sport team connections.
Gjaja also recently contributed a written piece that was featured as part of the Tiger Voices series. You can read it here.
