Field Hockey, Women's Ice Hockey & Wrestling Selected As Chi '83 / Ingram '83 Award Recipients
May 29, 2020 | Field Hockey, General, Women's Ice Hockey, Wrestling
Princeton Athletics announced the recipients of the 2019-20 Chi-Ingram Awards, with the field hockey, women's hockey and wrestling programs chosen as this year's winners.
The Chi '83 / Ingram '83 Endowment Fund was established by Youngsuk "Y.S." Chi '83 and John Ingram '83 in 2011. This endowment provides the Department of Athletics with supplemental funding for a team or teams whose coach or coaches demonstrate excellence in teaching and developing student-athletes not only as players but also as people. This prestigious honor is awarded annually by the Ford Family Director of Athletics. A shining example of "the team around the team" quality that distinguishes Princeton Athletics, this endowment fund highlights the tremendous support that undergirds our programs.
"Princeton Athletics is fortunate to have a long tradition of dedicated and skilled coaches who are committed to both Education through Athletics and competitive excellence," said Ford Family Director of Athletics Mollie Marcoux Samaan '91. "Each year it is both a great honor and a significant challenge to select the recipients of this prestigious honor as we have so many deserving teams and coaches. We are so grateful to Y.S. and John for their ongoing commitment and support of our programs whose coaches serve as educators and mentors to our student-athletes."

The three selected programs demonstrated excellence throughout 2019-20, each securing a championship and high national rankings.
Carla Tagliente's field hockey team started the year off in spectacular fashion by not only putting together an undefeated Ivy League slate to secure the program's 26th Ivy title but in the process also qualifying for a 15th-consecutive NCAA Tournament. Once in the national tournament, the Tigers won three games to advance to the national final for the fourth time in program history.
"It is a tremendous honor to be one of the recipients of the Chi-Ingram Award," said Tagliente. "We are so proud of the 2019 season and the work this team put in both on and off the field. It's been such a privilege to work with such talented and driven young women. Princeton is such a special place and has created a unique 'team around the team' philosophy which has given us the foundation to be successful."
In the winter, Cara Morey and the women's ice hockey team made program history by securing the program's first-ever ECAC Championship with an overtime victory in the championship game at No. 1 Cornell. The Tigers won a program-record 26 games this season, and had qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row – the first time in program history Princeton earned consecutive NCAA bids.
"On behalf of our entire program, I'm honored and proud to receive this award," said Morey. "This award recognizes the character of our players and the spirit of Princeton women's ice hockey. It's a conscious effort of myself and my staff to make sure we not only develop outstanding hockey players on the ice, but that we also develop future female leaders and citizens away from the rink. I'm so proud of our players as they continue to embody the core values of PWIH and of Princeton Athletics."
On the mats, Chris Ayres and the wrestling team produced one of the finest seasons in program history. In February, the grapplers knocked off Cornell to not only end the Big Red's 92-match unbeaten streak in Ivy League duals, but to secure the program's first Ivy League title since 1986. In the process, the wrestling team claimed Princeton's 500th overall Ivy League championship – most among any of the Ancient Eight schools. Individually, the team had a record four wrestlers earn All-America honors.
"This past year was special for the Princeton Wrestling program, and we accomplished a lot of 'firsts' for our team," said Ayres. "I am honored to add another special moment to the list with our selection as a recipient of the Chi-Ingram Award. While the endgame of wrestling falls on the individual out there on the mat competing, it takes a complete team effort to put that individual in the best position possible to succeed. We have a great team in place with Princeton Wrestling and on behalf of that family I am proud to accept this award."
