Princeton Athletics COVID-19 Update
July 06, 2020 | General
February 18 Update
Consistent with its commitment to safeguard the health and wellbeing of student-athletes, the greater campus community and general public, the Ivy League Council of Presidents has decided not to hold league competition or host league championships this spring. While acknowledging that the current public health environment is not compatible with a traditional Ivy League season, the Council has also put in place a process that may allow for limited, local competition during the spring if public health conditions improve sufficiently to allow greater levels of in-person activity at Ivy League campuses.
Athletics training opportunities and practices for enrolled student-athletes will continue to be permitted, provided they are structured in accordance with each institution's procedures and applicable state and local regulations. This approach is consistent with the phased approach implemented by the Ivy League for all sports in the fall 2020 term.
These decisions are grounded in public health best practices and informed by the pandemic related policies currently in place at member institutions. The ability of the league's members to continue on-campus operations during the ongoing pandemic requires rigorous limitations on travel, visitors, gatherings, and other elements that are essential for intercollegiate athletics competition.

January 15 Update
The Ivy League and its member institutions continue to monitor the state and trends of the COVID-19 pandemic across the country and in their campus communities waiting for the time when the public health environment improves sufficiently to support a return to normal campus activity. Normal activity would include regular athletics practice, training, and competition activity across our campuses. The League's Athletics departments have worked diligently since last March on developing various contingency plans and frameworks to allow for the return to athletics activity and competition when it is deemed safe and appropriate to do so.
November 12 Announcement Regarding Ivy League's Decision Regarding Winter Athletic Competition
On November 12, the Ivy League announced a decision that there will be no winter athletic competition during the 2020-21 academic year. Spring sports are postponed through the end of February with a final decision to follow in the coming months. In addition, fall sports will not compete during the Spring 2021 semester. Athletics training opportunities and practices for enrolled student-athletes will be permitted, provided they are structured in accordance with each institution's procedures and applicable state and local regulations. This approach is consistent with the phased approach implemented by the Ivy League for all sports in the fall 2020 term.
November 12 Statement From Princeton's Ford Family Director of Athletics, Mollie Marcoux Samaan '91
"I am deeply saddened for our student-athletes who steadfastly desire a return to representing Princeton University in competition. Unfortunately, the uncertainty around COVID-19 remains and the risks surrounding this health crisis require more patience before returning to play. The Council of Ivy League Presidents, the Ivy League leadership team and the Athletics Directors continue to put considerable thought into how to manage this global pandemic and while it was determined that we are still not able to compete safely, the commitment to Athletics and it's critical and fully integrated role on our campuses has only been strengthened by our collective commitment to the safety and well-being of students, staff and the greater campus communities.
Within Princeton Athletics, our passion and dedication to each other remains the same. While we are not preparing to compete this winter, we continue to prepare our young men and women to achieve, serve and lead. Our mission of education through athletics persists, strengthened by the knowledge that when the moment arrives and it is appropriate for us to return to competition, our Princeton Athletics family will do so with renewed spirit and a continued commitment to excellence in all we do."
