On January 28, members of the Princeton men's soccer program spent time with one of their own as LAFC manager Bob Bradley '80 joined the Tigers for a virtual conversation.
"We are so lucky to have Bob share his experiences and wisdom with the Princeton Soccer Family," said men's head coach Jim Barlow '91. "Alums, undergrads, and athletic department staff can all learn from Bob's experience as a leader. His lessons in pursuing excellence with others, honesty, leadership, dealing with adversity and standing up for justice were valuable for us to hear as a new year begins. Princeton is fortunate to have Bob and other passionate leaders among its alumni base."
Bradley joined the coaches of Princeton men's and women's soccer teams, current student-athletes, alumni and supporters for a conversation on leadership, team-building, social justice, family and education. Time was spent discussing ways to connect with people across culture and experience to build a team and the importance of communication among a group.
"Our student-athletes, alums, fellow coaches and members of our administration had a chance to hear from a soccer icon," said women's head coach Sean Driscoll. "Bob's accomplishments are prodigious, but what I find unique is the consistency of his message. He has a real conviction in his values and beliefs that I admire and, most importantly, he is authentic. His suggestion that we need to engage people in a meaningful way through reflection, perspective and truth resonated with me. I'm beyond grateful that Bob took the time to share his thoughts and experiences with all of us and I am certain everyone left that discussion inspired."
Bradley has coached LAFC since its inaugural season in 2017, his fourth stint leading a MLS club. A three-time MLS Coach of The Year (1998, 2006, 2019), Bradley won the 1998 MLS Cup with the Chicago Fire. From 2006-11, Bradley was head coach of the United States Men's National Team including the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He would go on to serve as manager of the Egypt's national team from 2011-13 and time as a manager with professional teams in Europe before returning to the United States and MLS in 2017.
Bradley was a four-time letterwinner during his playing days at Princeton, competing in two NCAA Tournaments. From 1984-95, he was head coach at his alma mater where he won two Ivy League championships and appeared in three NCAA Tournaments -- including a run to the national semifinals in 1993. At the end of that 1993 season, he was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year.
