Yeager's Four Goals Help No. 18 Princeton Past Dartmouth 6-0
October 09, 2021 | Field Hockey, General
For someone who plays what is essentially a defensive position, Beth Yeager is awfully good at the other end of the field.
Yeager, a defensive midfielder, once again made her presence felt on the offensive side, scoring four times to lead Princeton to a 6-0 win over Dartmouth Saturday afternoon in Hanover, N.H. The win was Princeton's ninth straight over Dartmouth, the last five of which have come by shutouts. More importantly, it was Princeton's third-straight win this season, pushing the Tigers over .500 to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League heading into Friday's ESPNU-televised game at home against Cornell.
Yeager's four goals give her 14 for her career, in just 11 games. The Ivy League leader in goals and points, Yeager also had her first career four-goal game, and it was Princeton's first four-goal game since Kat Sharkey did so three times in the NCAA-championship 2012 season.
It was Sammy Popper who started the scoring as she converted after Aimee Jungfer dribbled into the circle and centered it, making it 1-0 Tigers 10 minutes in. Yeager then was taken down in the circle and awarded a stroke, which she converted to make it 2-0 in the second. It stayed that way until halftime, but not much longer, as Claire Donovan threaded a pass to Ali McCarthy, who knocked it home just 26 seconds into the third quarter, making it 3-0.
Yeager doubled that total all by herself, the first two off corners, assists to Grace Schulze and Ophelie Bemelmans on the first and McCarthy and Bemelmans on the second. Her final goal of the day came after Zoe Shephard set her up inside the circle.
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 19-4. Robyn Thompson made two saves for the shutout.
