What made you choose a career in healthcare?
I love children and felt I would have the greatest impact in their lives through a career in medicine. To not only inspire them to make healthy choices but also those close to them to do the same. Partnering with them and their families is a privilege and humble challenge. So much of being a physician is teaching which I find incredibly rewarding.
What is the focus of your work today?
Pulmonary disease in the prenatal period through early adulthood. Medical education for trainees at various levels (students, residents). Advocacy through local and state legislation.
How has your work changed in the face of COVID-19?
I love children and felt I would have the greatest impact in their lives through a career in medicine.Anne Coates
Where do I begin?! The most profound has been through telehealth which has largely been positive. Especially protecting in a poor, large, rural state like Maine, where many of my patients struggle to get to clinic, we have seen an ease and appreciation for this tool. As children are largely healthier from a pulmonary perspective with the precautions many currently take (wearing mask, washing hands, physical distancing, etc.), fewer sick visits, ER visits, and hospitalizations for viral illnesses.
How did being a Princeton student-athlete prepare you for the challenges you’ve faced?
The discipline, the focus, the highs and lows associated with the training and competing, all while juggling a demanding academic schedule, help prepare you for the rigors of medical training and practice.
What keeps you inspired as you look ahead?
Our children! The feedback from patients and families that care/advice you provided had a positive impact on their life. The joy of teaching within medical education.
