Currier Named Finalist For PLL Most Valuable Player Award As Playoffs Begin
August 20, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse
It's never much of a stretch to include "Zach Currier" and "valuable" in the same sentence, and so it should be of little surprise that the Princeton alum is one of the finalists for the Premier Lacrosse League's Most Valuable Player Award.
Currier is one of five players who have been named as finalists for the Jim Brown MVP Award, along with Grant Ament, Jeff Teat, Blaze Riordan and Lyle Thompson. Currier is the only midfielder in the group along with the goalie Riordan and three attackmen. Not surprisingly, Currier is also a finalist for the league's Gait Brothers Midfielder of the Year award. Again not surprisingly, fellow Princeton alum Tom Schreiber is also a finalist for the top midfielder award, something Schreiber has won in each of the league's first two seasons.
Widely considered the best all-around talent in the game, Currier is the only player in the PLL who has reached double figures in goals and assists and also had at least 50 ground balls. He's also the only player in double figures in goals and assists with at least seven caused turnovers. For the regular season, Currier's numbers were 11 goals, 11 assists, 51 ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
Schreiber ranks eighth in the league in points with 27, on 14 goals and 13 assists. He ranks fifth in the league in assists.
Schreiber and fellow Princeton grad Ryan Ambler (13 goals, two assists), teammates on an Archers team led by former Princeton coach Chris Bates, begin the PLL playoffs tonight (Friday) at 8:30 pm Eastern time against the Chaos. That game can be seen on NBC Sports Network.
Currier and his Waterdogs team earned the top seed in the playoffs and have a first-round bye into the semifinals. Michael Sowers, Princeton's all-time leading scorer, is also on the Waterdogs, though he missed the final eight games of the season after being checked in the back of the head in Week 1. The Waterdogs will play the winner of the Whipsnakes-Redwoods quarterfinal game in the semifinals on Sunday, Sept. 5. The Whipsnakes feature Princeton Director of Operations Chris Aslanian, who had five goals and an assist in the regular season.
