Men’s Volleyball Opens 2022 Season at #12 USC

LOS ANGELES – The Princeton University men's volleyball team fell 3-0 (35-33, 25-22, 25-20) in its season opener to the #12 University of Southern California, Wednesday night inside the Galen Center.
Sophomore Ben Harrington had a team-high 13 kills on a .385 hitting percentage, and junior Nate Thompson added 10 kills with a .529 hitting percentage. Sophomore Josh Coan led the match in blocks with five, and senior Joe Kelly finished with a team-high 23 assists. First year Matt Suh led Princeton in digs, with six.
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle that saw 14 ties and three lead changes. A kill by Coan and a block by Harrington saw the Tigers extend their advantage to 14-11, but the two teams would continue to trade points for the remainder of the set. An Omene kill from the back row gave Princeton set point, 24-23, but the Trojans turned the tables and took their own set point, 27-26, and would hold on the for 35-33 first set win.
A kill by Harrington led off a 3-0 Princeton run that saw the Tigers take a 7-3 advantage in the second set, then the Tigers would extend their lead to five after another Harrington kill put Princeton ahead, 11-6. The #12 Trojans battled back to knot the score at 16-16, then took the lead at 19-18. From there, #12 USC did not look back and prevailed in the set with a final score of 25-22.
The #12 Trojans raced out to an 8-4 lead in the third set, but Princeton battled back to knot the score at 14-14 after a double block by junior Brady Wedbush and first year Nyherowo Omene, then take a 15-14 lead following a kill by Wedbush. With the score tied 16-16, #12 USC went on a 5-0 run and surged ahead, 21-16. The advantage proved insurmountable, as the #12 Trojans won the set, 25-20, and the match 3-0.
