MALIBU, CALIF – The Princeton University men's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) to the No. 4 Pepperdine Waves, Monday night inside the Firestone Field House.
First year Nyherowo Omene lead the team with 10 kills, Ben Harrington tallying nine more. Henry Wedbush, another first year, distributed 31 assists, while also leading the team in digs with five. Henry's brother Brady Wedbush had a .500 hitting percentage, along with three service aces.
Pepperdine quickly took control of the first set, going on a 4-0 run to start the match. Princeton closed the gap to three at 10-7, following a Brady Wedbush service ace. Pepperdine would go up by as many as five points after that, but the Tigers would go on a 4-0 run of their own to make it a one score game at 19-18. Pepperdine wouldn't let Princeton get any closer than two before taking the first set 25-21.
The Tigers would take their first lead of the game at 1-0 in the second set, but soon found themselves in a 9-5 hole. Princeton would score three straight to make it 9-8, highlighted by two Brady Wedbush service aces in a row. The Tigers would not threaten Pepperdine the rest of the set, which the Waves took 25-20.
Pepperdine would go ahead early in the third set, taking a 3-0 advantage before the Tigers answered. Princeton would eventually tie the game at eight a-piece, fueled by another 4-0 run orchestrated by the first year phenom, Nyherowo Omene. The Tigers kept that momentum going, taking a 10-9 lead on an attacking error by Pepperdine. Princeton went ahead by two points for a 12-10 lead, before the Waves crashed the party with four unanswered points of their own. A Ben Harrington kill brought the Tigers back within one at 14-13, but Pepperdine would slam the door shut en route to a 25-20 third set victory.
