Princeton To Host Ohio State In Fall Scrimmage Friday, Head To Barcelona Saturday
October 12, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
The last time the Princeton men's lacrosse team had a game it was during NCAA Championship Weekend. Princeton's next games, a total of three in the next week, won't have such high stakes, though they do figure to be quite an experience in their own right.
Â
Princeton, who reached the NCAA semifinals last spring, will play Ohio State, an NCAA tournament team a year ago as well, Friday night on Sherrerd Field. The next day Princeton will fly to Barcelona to spend fall break in Spain and Andorra, touring, doing community service and playing two games against a European all-star team, including one game under the sixes format.
Â
"We're so excited for this week," said Princeton head coach Matt Madalon. "We want to give our guys the best experience they can have, and following up a trip to the Final Four with this foreign trip is all part of that. We're beyond grateful to the Friends of Princeton Lacrosse for making this happen, and we can't wait to get on the field with Ohio State and then get on the plane."
Â
Princeton is making its fifth international trip and first since a 2016 trip to Portugal. Prior to that, there were trips to Japan (2004), Spain and Ireland (2008) and Costa Rica (2012).
Â
The team flies into Barcelona and then buses to Andorra, which sits between Spain and France in the Pyrenees. Andorra is one of the six microstates of Europe, along with Malta, Monaco, Lichtenstein, Vatican City and San Marino.
Â
Among the adventures on the itinerary in Andorra and then back in Barcelona for the second half of the trip are hiking near the French border, a visit to the longest Alpine toboggan run in the world, a visit to one of the longest suspension bridges in the world (2,000 feet long at an elevation of 6,000 feet), community service work, a youth lacrosse clinic and attendance at the Barcelona-Villarreal soccer game.
Â
There will also be practices and then the two games, the first of which will be in the sixes format.
Â
Before that is the game against Ohio State, a team Princeton has played only once, back in 1982.
Â
Princeton went 11-5 a year ago and finished the year ranked third nationally. Â
