USA Volleyball Release
HAVANA, Cuba – Nyherowo Omene of the Princeton University men's volleyball team is one of 12 athletes on the USA Volleyball U21 roster competing at the Men's U21 Pan American Cup running from Monday, October 3, until Sunday, October 8.
The training team of 21 players wrapped up its' practices at the end of September at the Team Training Center in Anaheim, California. Following the end of training, Omene was one of the 12 players selected to travel to Havana, Cuba, and compete in the U21 Pan American Cup.
Omene is no stranger to international competition. He is one of eight athletes on the roster who earned a spot on last year's Boys U19 National Training Team, and one of two athletes on the roster who played on national teams earlier this summer.
The U21 team will be led by head coach, Andy Read, who has led men's senior teams to bronze medals at the Pan American Cup and the Pan American Cup Final Six earlier this year. Omene was a member of both teams. Read will also be assisted by Ohio State Associate Head Coach Hudson Bates and Chris Seiffert, an assistant coach at Concordia University Irvine.
In Havana, the U.S. Men start in pool A along with Chile, the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Pool B includes Canada, Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua.
The team is off to a strong start, having won their opening pool play match on Tuesday, October 4, against Mexico. Their opening match was originally scheduled against Chile on Monday, October 3, but had to be moved due to Chile's travel delay caused by Hurricane Ian.
The U.S. victory against Mexico was decided within a five-set tie-break, 3-2 (25-13, 24-26, 25-21, 22-25, 15-12) played at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum. Omene finished with five kills, two service aces and two digs.
The top two Pan Am Cup finishers from NORCECA countries will qualify for the 2023 FIVB Men's U21 World Championship.
