February 18, 2022 | Men's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University men's volleyball team defeated the University of Charleston 3-1, (25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19), Friday night inside Dillon Gym.
Sophomore Ben Harrington lead the team with 15 kills, to go along with a .321 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, first year Henry Wedbush dished out 38 assists while junior Nico Posivak contributed 12 digs. First year Nyherowo Omene notched a game high four service aces.
The Tigers spent much of the first set playing catch up, dropping the first three points to the visiting team. The orange and black would pull within one of the Golden Eagles on three early occasions, but things looked grim with the Tigers trailing 16-11. Princeton would then rattle off three straight points, with first year Nyherowo Omene contributing on two of those. Charleston would answer back, upping their lead to 20-16. The Tigers would go on another 3-0 run, eventually tying the game at 22-all. Three of the next four points would go to the orange and black, with the Tigers taking the first set 25-23.
The beginning of the second set would be hotly contested, but the Tigers would pull way ahead after a 4-0 run to make it 7-3, followed by a 6-0 run to make it 14-5. Ben Harrington was a big part of Princeton's success in the second set, serving on five of six of those points and scoring two himself. The Golden Eagles would score four straight points later in the set, but it was too little to late, and Princeton secured the second set 25-16.
University of Charleston would come out firing in the third set, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. Though the Tigers continued to trail midway through the set, they were never too far away. Princeton would eventually pull even with the Golden Eagles at 18-18, and even take a 20-18 lead. Charleston wouldn't quit however, jumping ahead of the Tigers 23-22 and never looking back. The Golden Eagles would take the third set by a score of 25-23.
The beginning of the fourth set began much like the others, with some tense back and forth action. The orange and black would put an end to that soon enough however, going on a six-point scoring spree to make it 10-3. The Golden Eagles would score six of the next eight points awarded, but the Tigers would never let Charleston within more the three points. Princeton would go on to win the fourth set 25-19, the final score a 3-1 victory in favor of the Tigers.
