Men's Volleyball Downs No. 15 NJIT Behind Hartley's Career Night
March 26, 2022 | Men's Volleyball
PRINCETON, N.J. – Behind a career-best outing from sophomore James Hartley, the Princeton University men's volleyball team overcame the No. 15 New Jersey Institute of Technology, 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 26-24, 25-17), Saturday evening inside Dillon Gymnasium.
Hartley recorded a match and career-high 21 kills on a .412 hitting percentage, and also added four blocks. Senior Joe Kelly added a team-high 47 assists, and sophomore Ben Harrington led Princeton in digs with six. Sophomore Gavin Leising's eight blocks were also a match and career-high.
The Tigers got off to an impressive start, opening the match on a 4-0 run that featured a pair of double blocks by Leising and Hartley, along with two Highlander attacking errors. While NJIT were able to knot the score at 10-10 and 18-18, a 5-0 Tiger run capped by a first year Nyherowo Omene service ace gave Princeton a 23-18 advantage; the Tigers went on to win the set, 25-21.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle, with a Harrington kill knotting the score at 8-8. A 6-0 run by NJIT saw the Highlanders surge ahead, 15-9, and went to prevail in the set, 25-19.
While the Highlanders took an 8-6 lead in the third set, a Hartley kill sparked a 3-0 run, giving the Tigers a 9-8 advantage. Shortly after, Princeton used another 3-0 run to gain a 14-11 advantage, this one led off by a Dixon kill. The Highlanders kept it close, but a Leising kill gave Princeton set point at 25-24, then a ball handling error by NJIT gave the Tigers the set, with a score of 26-24.
A kill by Harrington sparked a 3-0 run early in the fourth set, giving Princeton a 6-3 lead. The Tigers used another 3-0 run, this one led off by a Hartley kill, to take a 15-17 advantage and did not look back from there; fittingly, it was Hartley who delivered the kill on match point to give Princeton the 25-17 victory in the fourth set, along with the 4-1 final score in the match.
