Fencers Bring Home Team Trophy, Individual Title, Seven All-Americans from NCAAs
March 27, 2022 | General, Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Earning its best team finish since 2017, the Princeton fencing programs finished fourth at the NCAA Championships on Sunday, capping a weekend that included a national champion, four national semifinalists, and seven All-Americans.
Princeton won a top-four team trophy every year from 2011-17 and returned to the NCAA Championships this year for the first time since 2019 after the 2020 event was canceled and the Ivy League did not compete during the winter season in 2021.
The men's competition concluded on Sunday with freshman épée Nicholas Lawson and junior foil Mohamed Hamza making the semifinals. Lawson won his semifinal bout over Penn's Emon Daroian 15-11, taking control of a match that was never more than two touches apart until Lawson opened what was an 8-7 lead to 10-7, and then never letting the margin drop below three touches the rest of the way.
Hamza's semifinal followed, and though Hamza rallied back from being down 14-12 to tie it at 14-14, Columbia's Ashton Daniel had the decisive touch to advance to the final.
In the épée final, Lawson was even at 7-7 early in the second period, but Ohio State's Gabriel Feinberg had the next three touches on the way to a 15-11 win.
Both Lawson, as runner-up, and Hamza, as a finalist, earned USFCA All-American honors. Lawson's épée teammate, freshman Ryan Lee, finished 18th, while Hamza's foil teammate, sophomore Jasper Levy, finished 22nd. Princeton's saber qualifiers, freshman Ronald Anglade and sophomore Andrew Johnson, finished 17th and 24th.
The women's competition concluded on Friday with freshman Maia Weintraub becoming Princeton's first NCAA foil champion since 2000 and finishing as one of five women's All-Americans for Princeton, along with senior saber Maia Chamberlain, who made the semifinals, senior saber Galen Cadley, who finished seventh, freshman épée Jessica Lin, who finished fifth, and junior épée Lola Constantino, who finished ninth. Freshman foil Tinney Mak finished 16th in her NCAA Championships debut.
