Donovan, Sowers To Compete For U.S. Team In Sixes At World Games 2022
March 30, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse, Women's Lacrosse
If you saw Marge Donovan as she raced to the goal and score in Tuesday night's women's lacrosse game against Stony Brook, you might have a better understanding of why she might be pretty much perfect for the new "Sixes" format. If you've ever seen Michael Sowers do anything on a lacrosse field, you already understood why he would be as well.
Â
Donovan, a Princeton senior, and Sowers, a member of the Class of 2020 and the all-time leading scorer in Princeton men's lacrosse history, have both been named to the 24-member United States team (12 on the men's side, 12 on the women's side) for the upcoming World Games 2022, to be held in Birmingham, Ala., this July.
Â
From USA Lacrosse:
The Sixes discipline was formally announced in May 2021 by World Lacrosse after more than three years of work. World Lacrosse, which continues to sponsor major international championships for box and field lacrosse, appointed a working group to develop a version of the sport that would complement the existing box and field versions of the sport that would meet the following five objectives:
Â
Donovan is a defender for the women's lacrosse team, but she is also great at picking up loose balls and in transition. Her strengths are her speed, her fitness and her tenacity, which along with her ability to defend and turn defense into offense are essential for the Sixes game. Donovan, who is third all-time at Princeton in draw controls, was an honorable mention All-American in 2019 and a preseason All-American this year.
Â
Sowers is Princeton's career leader in points (302) and assists (181) and was on his way to winning the Tewaaraton Trophy when the 2020 season was postponed. Combined with his 80 points at Duke as a graduate student last year, Sowers ranks second in NCAA history with 382 career points. He plays professionally for the Waterdogs of the Premier Lacrosse League.

- Support and encourage the continued growth of lacrosse worldwide
- Provide greater access to lacrosse by eliminating barriers to entry (e.g., cost, team size, field size)
- Appeal to the next generation of sport participants and fans with a discipline that features tempo, speed, scoring and less specialization
- Over time, create greater competitive balance internationally by bringing more nations within reach of the podium at major international events
- And, fit within the 21st Century Olympic framework, where the International Olympic Committee and Host Cities are working to reduce the cost and complexity of staging the Olympic Games.
