Men's Lacrosse: Baughan Named To USILA Team, New Rankings, Early Ivy Tournament Scenarios
April 12, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
George Baughan continues to play like one of the very best defensemen in Division I men's lacrosse. This past week, he showcased all of his skills, with four caused turnovers, 11 ground balls and one blanked thrown over an opponent who had previously had at least one point in all 27 games of his career to date.
Â
Baughan's performance helped third-ranked Princeton to a 2-0 week and landed him on the USILA Team of the Week. The senior All-American became the fourth Princeton player to earn the honor this week, after Andrew Song, Chris Brown and Erik Peters had all done so earlier.
Â
Princeton is now ranked third in the USA Lacrosse Magazine, Inside Lacrosse media and USILA coaches' polls. Princeton is 8-2 on the year, and going by the USILA poll, Princeton has five wins over teams currently ranked: No. 2 Georgetown, No. 7 Rutgers, No. 11 Penn, No. 16 Boston University and No. 20 Brown. Princeton's losses are to No. 1 Maryland and No. 5 Yale, with games still to play against No. 14 Harvard and No. 4 Cornell.
Â
The Tigers are home this Saturday against Dartmouth in the second game of a doubleheader that begins when the Princeton and Dartmouth meet at noon. Princeton goes into its game with the ability to clinch an Ivy League tournament spot, but only with a win and then if the results of the two other Ivy games Saturday go a certain way as well.
Â
Yale is the only team that enters the weekend needing only its own win (at Brown) to clinch a spot. Cornell, who plays Army in a non-league game Saturday, cannot mathematically clinch a spot this weekend no matter the outcomes of the league games.
Â
If Yale does not beat Brown, then no team can clinch an Ivy tournament spot this weekend. If Yale does beat Brown, then Harvard would clinch a spot by beating Penn as well. Princeton can only clinch a spot this weekend by defeating Dartmouth and having Yale and Harvard both win. At minimum, Princeton would be in the Ivy tournament with two wins in its final three games, regardless of what happens in any other game. There are also several scenarios where Princeton would get in with only one win.
Â
Princeton is one of four teams that is assured of no worse than a share of the league title by winning out, along with Yale, Cornell and Harvard. Cornell is the only team that would host the league tournament by winning its remaining league games; Princeton cannot host the tournament without at least one more loss by Yale.
