Monday Men's Lacrosse - Milestones, Rankings, Scenarios
April 25, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
With the men's lacrosse regular season about to enter its final weekend, there are several members of the Princeton men's lacrosse team who are having milestone seasons or approaching some big ones.
Â
For starters, there is Chris Brown. The senior attackman has 28 goals and 33 assists on the season, giving him a team-best 61 points, making him the 10th Princeton player to have more than 60 points in a season. Brown currently has 168 career points, which ranks him 11th in program history, six away from Wick Sollers for 10th.
Â
Beyond that, Brown also has 98 career goals, which leaves him two goals away from major accomplishments. First, if he gets two goals, he'd be the 14th player to reach 100 goals for a career. If he does so, he'd also reach 30 for the season, which would make him only the fourth Princeton player to have a season with at least 30 goals and 30 assists, joining the select company of David Tickner (34G, 32A in 1976), Mike MacDonald (48G, 30A in 2015) and Michael Sowers (41G, 41A in 2017; 37G, 53A in 2019).
Â
Jake Stevens continues to put up big numbers as both a scorer and on ground balls. In fact, he now has 20 goals and 54 ground balls, which makes him the first player to reach those totals in the same season since Zach Currier did so in 2017, when he had 24 goals and 130 ground balls. Before Currier, you have to all the way back to 1996 to find a Princeton player (actually two) who did so – Jesse Hubbard and Jon Hess.
Â
Coulter Mackesy has 19 goals and 13 assists for 32 points, which has him eighth among Princeton freshman all-time. With five more points, he'd move all the way up to tying Brown for fourth place.
Â
Finally, Alex Slusher has become the 12th player in program history to reach 40 goals in a season.
Â
Princeton is now ranked fifth in the USILA coaches' poll and the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll and seventh in the Inside Lacrosse media poll. More importantly, Princeton is still the No. 2 team in the RPI, helped along by wins over No. 3 Georgetown, No. 5 Penn, No. 6 Rutgers, No. 8 Brown and No. 12 Boston University.
Â
Princeton hosts Cornell Saturday at noon, with a share of the Ivy League championship and spot in the league tournament for the winner. Princeton would host the Ivy tournament with a win over Cornell and wins by Brown over Dartmouth and Yale over Harvard. Should Brown beat Dartmouth, then the Princeton-Cornell winner would make the Ivy tournament while the other would not.
