Schreiber, Currier, Bates Finalists For PLL Awards As Regular Season Ends
August 26, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
The Premier Lacrosse League has announced the finalists for its yearly awards, and it's hardly surprising to see where Princeton is represented. Actually, the least surprising nomination might be in one non-performance related category.
Â
Princeton alums Tom Schreiber (Archers) and Zach Currier (Waterdogs) have a combined four nominations, the league has announced. Schreiber has been nominated in three categories: Most Valuable Player, Midfielder of the Year and the Sportsmanship Award. If you've ever met Schreiber or watched how he plays, none of those are all that shocking, especially a sportsmanship award.
Â
Currier is also a finalist for the Midfielder of the Year Award. Schreiber and Currier are the only players ever to win the award.
Â
Schreiber finished the regular season with 35 points (17 goals2 two-point goals, 14 assists), which left him sixth in the PLL and nine points ahead of the next-best total by a middie.
Â
As for Currier, he did what he always does, which is fill up basically the entire stat sheet. The world's top all-around player had 11 goals, eight assists and 53 ground balls, which were 31 more ground balls than any other non-face-off shortstick in the league.
Princeton is also represented in the Coach of the Year finalists, as former Tiger head coach Chris Bates of the Archers is one of the finalists.
Â
The other two Princeton alums in the league also had big seasons. Michael Sowers (Waterdogs) finished 10th in the league with 32 points on 21 goals and 11 assists despite missing one game due to injury, and Ryan Ambler (Archers) had 13 goals and two assists in the regular season. Assistant coach Chris Aslanian played five games for the Cannons and finished with four goals and five assists.
Â
The league playoffs begin Sept. 3 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., when the Archers take on the Redwoods at 2:30 and the Waterdogs play the Atlas at 5:10. The tripleheader begins with the Chaos and Chrome at noon.
Â
The semifinals will be Sept. 11 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., and the championship game will be Sept. 18 at Subaru Park, also the home of the Philadelphia Union of MLS, in Chester, Pa.
