Women’s Volleyball Earns 3-0 Sweep of Radford
September 03, 2022 | Women's Volleyball
TOWSON, Md. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team wrapped up the Towson Tournament with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-19) sweep of Radford University Sunday afternoon inside SECU Arena.
Seniors Melina Mahood and Avery Luoma tied for the match-high in kills with 12, while Lindsey Kelly handed out a match-high 34 assists. Freshman Ella Bunde continued her outstaning service play, leading the match in aces with three. Senior Cameron Dames' 18 digs were a match-high, and freshman Lucia Scalamandre led the Tigers in blocks with two.
Sparked by a Mahood kill, the Tigers used a pair of 3-0 runs to jump out to a 7-2 lead in the first set. A 6-1 Princeton run saw the Tigers take a 19-8 lead, but the Highlanders responded with a 4-0 run of their own to make it a 19-12 set. With the Tigers ahead 20-13, a deceptive setter dump by Kelly led off the 5-0 run from which the Tigers closed out the set on, prevailing 25-13.
A kill by Luoma led off a 4-0 run that put Princeton up 4-1 in the second set, but Radford hung with the Tigers for much of it. The Highlanders used a 5-0 run to narrow the deficit to one, 17-16, then took the lead at 20-19, but a kill by Mahood tied it up at 20-20. From the stalemate, it was the Tigers who took the advantage and went on to win the set, 25-22.
The Highlanders took an early 4-2 lead in the third set, but kills by Luoma, Satchell, and sophomore Mariah Haislip gave the Tigers a 6-5 advantage. Radford re-took control following a 3-0 run of its own as the set became a back-and-forth battle. Luoma was influential down the stretch, delivering a kill followed by a service ace to put Princeton up, 17-14. Up 21-19, the Tigers ended the match on a 4-0 run, with Luoma producing a thunderous kill on match point, as the Tigers prevailed 25-19 in the set, and 3-0 in the match.
