SHU Tournament Begins for Women's Volleyball With Win Over Stony Brook

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team split its matches on the opening day of the Sacred Heart Tournament, first overcoming Stony Brook 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 27-25), before coming up just short against the host Pioneers in a five-set marathon, 3-2 (19-25, 13-25, 25-22, 25-23, 19-17) inside the Pitt Center Saturday.
Freshman Valerie Nutakor was dominant for the Tigers, combining for a team-high 36 kills on the day. She also recorded a double-double in both matches, finishing with 23 kills and 12 digs against Sacred Heart along with 13 kills and 10 digs against the Seawolves.
Senior Lindsey Kelly led the team in assists with 80, and tied for the team-high in service aces with freshman Lucia Scalamandre with five. Scalamandre also led the Tigers in blocks with 10, while Senior Cameron Dames' 40 digs were a team-high.
Junior Maya Satchell had an impressive day for Princeton, tallying a career-best 11 kills against Sacred Heart and a career-high 15 digs against the Seawolves. Junior Kathleen Bishop also finished with a career-high 12 kills in the Tigers' victory over Stony Brook.
Princeton vs. Stony Brook
Sparked by a Satchell kill, the Tigers used an early 7-0 run to surge ahead, 9-3. The Seawolves cut the deficit to one point at 14-13, but kills by Nutakor and Bishop kept the Tigers ahead, 16-13. A 4-0 run, capped off by a Bunde service ace, saw Princeton go up 22-15, and then it held on for the 25-17 first set victory.
With assistance from a pair of 3-0 runs, the Tigers took a 10-6 lead in the second set. A block followed by a service ace by Scalamandre gave Princeton a six-point lead at 15-9. The Tigers took a 21-16 lead after a kill by Satchell and a Nutakor service ace, before going on to triumph in the second set, 25-21.
It was Stony Brook who took the early advantage in the third set, taking a 15-12 lead. Scalamandre was influential down the stretch, as she delivered a solo block to bring the Tigers within one point at 20-19, then after a Seawolf ball handling error tied it up at 20-20, she fired off a service ace to put Princeton ahead, 21-20. The Seawolves bounced back to take set point, 24-23, but Princeton turned it around, closing the set out on a 3-0 run to prevail, 27-25, after a kill by Scalamandre on match point.
Princeton vs. Sacred Heart
The Tigers used a pair of 3-0 runs to take a 16-12 lead in the first set, and managed to stay in front throughout. Ahead 22-19, a Princeton closed the set out with another 3-0 run, featuring a Pioneer service error followed by back-to-back kills by senior Avery Luoma to give the Tigers the 25-19 win.
A Nutakor kill sparked an early 4-0 run, giving Princeton a 5-2 advantage. Up 13-8, another Nutakor kill led off a 9-0 run that put the Tigers ahead, 22-8; from there, Princeton did not look back, holding on to take the second set, 25-13.
While Nutakor sparked a 3-0 run to give Princeton an 11-9 lead in the third set, SHU responded with a pair of 3-0 runs of its own to take a 17-14 lead. The set became a back-and-forth battle, but it was the Pioneers who prevailed, 25-22.
A kill by Scalamandre led off a 4-0 run early in the fourth set that put Princeton up, 7-3. However, Sacred Heart would bounce back with a 5-0 run, tying the score at 14-14, before edging ahead in a close fourth set, sending the match to five with a 25-23 triumph.
Little split the teams early in the fifth set, until a 3-0 SHU run gave the Pioneers a 10-8 advantage. Princeton showed resilience, and a kill by sophomore Mariah Haislip gave the Tigers match point at 14-13, but it was Sacred Heart who would outlast the Tigers in the end, winning the final set of a marathon match, 19-17.
