De San Jorge Reflects On Making History Ahead Of First-Ever Varsity Rugby Home Match Saturday
September 09, 2022 | Women's Rugby
Princeton (0-1) vs. Army West Point (1-0)

There's going to be a lot of "firsts" this season for the Princeton women's rugby team, and the next opportunity to make some history awaits on Saturday as the Tigers host Army West Point in the first varsity home match in program history.
Naturally, Saturday is "Alumni Appreciation Day" for the Tigers. At halftime. the rugby program wil take time to honor the alumni who have paved the way for the new ear of Princeton Rugby by laying the foundations of culture and values which the 2022 team carries forth each time they step on the field.
Of all the alumni and caretakers of the program who will be in attendance on Saturday, none will be able to lay claim to what Erica de San Jorge can -- she scored the first varsity try in program history. Her score 31' into last weekend's debut at Sacred Heart officially put the Tigers on the scoreboard and gave the Orange and Black momentum heading into a second half where the played the Pioneers just about even.
"It felt surreal," de San Jorge said of the history-making moment which was not only the first successful try in varsity history -- it was de San Jorge's first try at any level of rugby! "Honestly, there was so much going on in the moment that I didn't even realize I scored the try until the referee blew his whistle. I just remember all of us working together as one unit in order to move the ball forward. After I scored, several of my teammates started yelling my name and running up to hug me and it was honestly the most amazing feeling."
"I think it is going to be an exhilarating game to watch and I'm excited to introduce rugby to more of the Princeton population," de San Jorge said. "In this game I expect us to continue to learn, grow and improve as we make Princeton Athletics history together. Most importantly I expect to have a super fun time on the pitch with my rugby family."
This season, just like the sport, will have ebbs and flows. There will be times where it feels like the line is advancing and times where the team is forced to recover and regroup. de San Jorge embraces that challenge, excited to keep building together with teammates.
"After the first game, I was smiling from ear to ear," she said. "More importantly I was so immensely proud of my team. Each and every one of my teammates left it all on the pitch and that was an awesome thing to witness. Reflecting post game has only made me more excited for the rest of our season starting with our first home match on Saturday."

Now, de San Jorge and her teammates set their sights on a new opportunity to make a first impression. Just like last week, there will be high emotions as the squad takes to its home field for the first time.Put It On The Board!
