Women’s Rugby Hosts Historic First Varsity Home Match
September 10, 2022 | Women's Rugby
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's rugby team continued to make history Saturday, hosting Army in its first varsity home match.
The match also served as Alumni Appreciation Day, as alumnae of the program were honored on the pitch at halftime and turned out in high numbers to support the Tigers.
"We knew it was going to be a tough match going into it, but we stayed connected to our intentions," said Head Coach Josie Ziluca. "Though the score line was drastic, when watching it certainly seemed closer. We had some key players stand up. Sophia Villacorta has been a class act at scrum half, helping our team with tackles when Army was charging our line. The team displayed a tremendous amount of physical courage throughout this game, and yet again kept their heads held up until the end. Good thing they did, because our scrums were more successful into the second half.
With such a novice team, any exposure we have to live play is an opportunity to grow. We're excited to dissect the film and get to work. Come join us this coming Saturday to see that work in motion against Brown. It should be a great matchup!
The home crowd was lively and we loved having all the support out there, including President Eisgruber and John Mack! It was a great step into continuing our historic journey in forging this varsity program."
While the scoreline showed 87-0 in Army's favor, the experience gained taking on last season's national runner-up was invaluable for the Tigers, who played in only their second match at the varsity level, and first ever at home.
