January 11, 2023 | General
Princeton Athletics has announced the hiring of Miles Smith, Jr. as its new Associate Director of Athletics for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Smith joins the Tigers after most recently serving as Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Development at The College of New Jersey.
"We are thrilled to welcome Miles and his family to Princeton Athletics," said Ford Family Director of Athletics John Mack '00. "The experience Miles has as both a DEI practitioner and an administrator, combined with his passion for student-athletes, makes him a perfect fit for our team."
A veteran of collegiate athletics administration with over 13 years of experience as a coach and administrator in addition to competing as an athlete in college, Smith brings a wealth of experience supporting student-athletes to his role.
"I am extremely excited and humbled to be joining the Princeton Athletics family. I would like to thank Director of Athletics John Mack for recognizing the importance of this work and investing in inclusive excellence. I would also like to thank Amanda DeMartino, Executive Director of Athletics at The College of New Jersey, for affording me the opportunity to grow as a creative and relational leader. My interest in this position grew as I began to review the Tigers Together initiative. I came away captivated by the purpose and commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Princeton. I envisioned this role as an educational expedition developing into more than just an inclusive athletic department, but becoming an innovative leader in college athletics for Inclusive Excellence. What excites me most is the opportunity to build on Princeton Athletics' rich history of Education Through Athletics. I look forward to leading and serving in this fundamental role, while working alongside student-athletes, coaches, alumni and administrators to create lifelong impact while ensuring that Princeton Athletics is a place where all can grow as inclusive leaders."
While at TCNJ, Smith was the Athletic Diversity Inclusion Designee (ADID) where he collaborated with TCNJ's Inclusive Excellence Department on DEI strategic planning and educational programming on racial equity and developed data for recruitment and retention of underrepresented student-athlete groups. In addition, he helped create and support projects designed to strengthen the mentorship bonds between minority students and alumni at TCNJ. He also served on the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee which developed educational programming on cultural inclusivity and racial equity for the first ever DEI summit for coaches and administrators.
In his role at TCNJ, Smith was also responsible for managing the department's compliance and eligibility processes and ensuring the department's adherence to all NCAA, NJAC and TCNJ rules and regulations, including administering annual compliance presentations, and rules education programming.
A 2009 graduate from Northern Vermont University-Johnson, Smith served as both Assistant Director of Athletics/Compliance and head men's basketball coach at his alma mater from 2015-21. He created and served as the advisor for the Coalition for Minority Student-Athletes (COMSA), highlighted by the formation of the Lamoille Arts and Justice Project, with a goal to bring awareness to the enduring inequalities within the Northern Vermont Region to achieve systemic change through collaborative movement in diverse contexts. COMSA student-athletes facilitated discussions on books related to social justice and produced a podcast on BIPOC people in Lamoille County. COMSA also worked together with Vermont State College students, faculty, and staff to create the Vermont State College system Anti-Racist pledge.
On the court, Smith was the 2015 North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year, served on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee and was the North Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Coaches Chair.
He had previous coaching stints during his career on the sidelines, including serving as the first head men's basketball coach at Wilson College from 2013-15 while also serving as an Admissions Counselor supporting the admissions department in strategic recruitment, selection and yielding of prospective students. Smith served as an assistant men's basketball coach at The College of New Jersey and Mercer County Community College.
