January 14, 2023 | Men's Volleyball
Los Angeles, CA – The Princeton University men's volleyball team fell to No. 2 UCLA on Friday night 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-14).
Junior Ben Harrington led the Tigers in kills with 13, and in digs with seven, while sophomore Henry Wedbush handed out 38 assists. Wedbush now has 100 assists recorded for the season following Friday night's match.
Freshman Ryan Vena led the team in blocks with three, while James Hartley came up with 3 service aces for the Tigers.
Princeton appeared fired up and ready to take on the Bruins in the first set. A trio of service aces from Hartley helped the Tigers to take a well-earned, 16-14 lead. Shortly after, a four point scoring run allowed the Tigers to stay ahead at 21-20. A full team effort and a match point kill from Nate Thompson closed out the set 25-22 in favor of the Tigers.
Set two remained a point-for point battle that stayed tight at 9-9. Once the Bruins found their flow, the team managed to take a 5-point lead ahead of the Tigers 15-20. Despite kills from several tigers contributing to points, too many service errors prevented Princeton from gaining the lead and caused UCLA to take the set 25-18
Tied at 1-1 going into the third set, the Tigers came out strong. Despite UCLA taking an early six point lead, Princeton was able to narrow the margin 17-13 thanks to a service ace from freshman, Owen Mellon. The Tigers never let up, but could not stop the blocks of the Bruin's. UCLA took set three with a score of 25-20.
In set four, an aggressive UCLA team jumped out to a 12-6 advantage. Despite four kills from Ben Harrington, the Bruins maintained their edge to stay ahead 11-19. To end Friday's match a Tiger error provided the set point for the Bruins to take the set 25-14.
