Men's Hockey Stymied By Yale, 4-0
February 18, 2023 | Men's Ice Hockey
Despite outshooting Yale, 40-26, Princeton came out on the wrong side of the bounces in a 4-0 loss to the Bulldogs at Hobey Baker Rink in the final home game of the regular season for the Tigers.
With the loss, the Tigers enter the final weekend of the regular season in seventh place in the ECAC -- three points ahead of both RPI and Union who await the Tigers next weekend in the Capital region.
Yale scored first, finding the back of the net midway through the first period. With the Bulldogs working on a 5-on-3 power play, Ian Carpentier weaved open at the top of the zone and sent a wrist shot from just inside the blue line that snuck through traffic in front at the 10:29 mark of the first.
Brendan Gorman had Princeton's best chance to equalize in the first period, breaking in on a 2-on-1 with older brother, Liam, with just under 3:00 to play. He was patient on the entry and beat goalie Nathan Reid – just didn't beat the crossbar as his offering clanged off the iron inches from leveling the game.
Yale would extend its lead to 2-0 with a Niklas Allain deflection midway through the second period. Off an Allain faceoff win, the puck funneled back to Brandon Tabakin whose low shot was redirected by Allain as he passed through the slot.
The Tigers again ran into some bad puck luck on a penalty kill late in the second as Spencer Kersten had a snapshot clang off the post while rushing forward on a 2-on-1.
David Chen added insurance for the Bulldogs with 8:19 remaining in the third period. Princeton had taken nine of the first 10 shots of the third period, but after a dominant shift from the Tigers, Chen stepped in front of a centering pass as Princeton attempted a regroup and he broke free the other way and finished the breakaway with a deke for a 3-0 Yale lead.
Carpentier tacked on the final goal – an empty-netter – with 1:05 to play.
The Tigers conclude the regular season with a trip to RPI (February 24) and Union (February 25). Faceoffs both evenings are at 7 p.m.
