Men's Volleyball Defeats Sacred Heart to Win Home Opening Match

Princeton N.J. - The Princeton University men's volleyball team claimed a 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22) victory over the Sacred Heart Pioneers, gaining their first win at home of the 2023 season. Princeton brought the energy and impressed in Friday night's match against the Pioneers.
Ben Harrington led the way for Princeton, leading the match in kills with 17. Nyherowo Omene nabbed five aces for the night to lead the Tigers, as well as three blocks. Henry Wedbush led the match in assists with 36 as well as digs, with 9.
The Tigers opened up the match with a strong start against Sacred Heart. The first set featured a seven point, Princeton scoring streak with two service aces from Nyherowo Omene to put the Tigers ahead 9-6. Sacred Heart battled back, but Princeton was able to maintain the TIger lead 18-13. Kills from Nate Thompson and Ben Harrington along with several, Pioneer errors contributed to the Princeton offense winning the opening set, 25-16.
Princeton a took an early lead in the second set 8-6, but the Pioneers fought back, tying things up at 9-9. Sacred Heart made a five point scoring run to take the lead 15-13. Despite the Tigers igniting a four point, scoring streak to take a 20-19 lead, a trio of Sacred Heart kills outscored the Tigers 25-23, handing SHU set No. 2 to tie the match.
The Tigers bounced back right away in set three. Ben Harrington executed an early three kills to help Princeton to get ahead 7-5. Princeton and Sacred Heart battled point-for-point, but a kill from Ryan Vena, a Nate Thompson service ace, and a Ben Harrington kill helped to put the Tigers up 15-11.
Following back-to-back points scored from Henry Wedbush via an ace and an Nyherowo Omene kill, Princeton continued to extend their lead 20-13.
To close out set three the Tigers took a five-point scoring run that included two kills from Thompson, to end the set in Princetons' favor 25-14, and give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Princeton was determined to gain a victory in the fourth set and close out the teams' home opener with a win. The Tiger offense came out on fire, with kills from Vena, Harrington, and Thompson all contributing to an early 12-8 lead for Princeton.
Sacred Heart refused to let up, battling back to tie things up 19-19. An unphased, Princeton offense took care of business with more kills from Omene and Harrington to make the Tiger lead 24-22. A Sacred Heart service error resulted in a Tiger match point, allowing Princeton to win the set 25-22, and the match overall 3-1.
