Mackesy Named Ivy Player Of The Week
March 27, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
The Princeton men's lacrosse team did not score on its first eight shots against Yale Saturday afternoon in a key Ivy League game on Sherrerd Field. This came after Princeton had connected on one of its final 18 shots in its overtime loss to Penn a week earlier. That added up to a 1 for 26 stretch for the Tigers.
Coulter Mackesy clearly had seen enough. After hitting the pipe on his first shot of the day, Mackesy finally broke through for Princeton with a goal on his second shot. And his third. And his fourth. And his fifth. Then he hit the pipe again on his sixth. Oh well. He scored again on his seventh. By the end of the day, Mackesy had eight goals and Princeton had a 23-10 win that snapped a four-game losing streak and pointed the Tigers in a new direction in the Ivy race as the calendar turns to April.
Mackey's huge day earned him a spot in the Princeton record book — and the Ivy League Player of the Week award. Mackey's eight goals tied for the third most in a game in Princeton history, and his two assists gave him 10 points, which made him the ninth player in program history to reach double figures in a game.
The win over Yale moved the Tigers up to No. 17 in the Inside Lacrosse media poll and No. 18 in the USILA coaches' poll. The Tigers, now 1-1 in the Ivy League, host Brown Saturday at 1.
