Princeton Takes Down Brown; Vardaro Reaches 100 Career Points
April 01, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
The calendar turned. The sun came out. The temperature went up. This is the kind of weather teams want to play in for as long as possible.
The Princeton men's lacrosse team took a big step in the direction of continuing to play once the calendar turns again, topping Brown 16-12 in front of 1,712 fans at Sherrerd Field. Coulter Mackesy and Sam English had three goals each, and Alexander Vardaro had three assists, and his final assist of the day made him the 39th player in program history to reach 100 career points.
The day started out with rain, but there was sunshine and temperatures in the 70s by the time the game ended on the first day of April in Princeton. The Tigers looked very much like a team that would like to still be playing once the calendar flips to May, improving to 2-1 in the Ivy League as they chase the four spots in the league tournament.
For the second year in a row, Princeton broke open a tight game against Brown with a 6-0 third-quarter run. Somewhat amazingly, the game last year in Providence went from 7-5 Tigers to 13-5 Tigers in a 9:08 stretch of the third quarter; this time, it went from 7-7 to 13-7 Tigers in a 9:03 stretch of the third.
Neither team had more than a one-goal lead at any point of the first half, which ended with the score 7-6 Princeton. Brown scored on the first possession of the third, but the 6-0 run immediately followed, beginning with a Tommy Barnds extra man goal and continuing with two from Lukas Stanat and one each from Mackesy, English and John Dunphey. For the second straight week, Princeton started Stanat and Jack Ringhofer on attack, and again both delivered, as Stanat had two goals and one assist for the second straight game and Ringhofer had his first two-goal game after having one against Yale last week.
The closest Brown would get the rest of the way would be at 15-12 midway through the fourth, but Ringhofer's second goal pushed it back to a four-goal game with five minutes left.
Brown outshot Princeton 61-45, with more than half of those shots, 31 to be exact, coming from the McLane brothers, Aidan and Devon, who combined to score seven of Brown's 12 goals.
Mackesy had three assists to go with his three goals, and English also had an assist. Jake Stevens and Christian Ronda also had two goals for the Tigers, who got 13 saves from Michael Gianforcaro. Cathal Roberts and Michael Bath continue to lead the team in caused turnovers, and both had two, with three ground balls apiece, on the day.
Princeton steps out of the league to host Syracuse this coming Saturday before finishing the regular season with games at Dartmouth, home against Harvard and at Cornell.
