Oh Baby — Princeton, Madalon Get Two Ws In One Day
April 15, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
The Princeton men's lacrosse team gathered for its postgame stretch on the far sideline at Dartmouth's Scully-Fahey Field Saturday afternoon when an impromptu chant broke out.
"Wyatt. Wyatt. Wyatt. Wyatt."
Princeton got two W's on one huge day, first when head coach Matt Madalon's wife Ashley gave birth to their son — Wyatt — at 3:30 am and then when the Tigers rolled past Dartmouth 17-7, behind four goals and four assists from Coulter Mackesy and two goals and five assists from Braedon Saris.
The win improved Princeton to 3-1 in the Ivy League, with the head-to-head tiebreaker over three-loss Dartmouth, Brown and Yale in the race for Ivy League tournament spots. While it would appear that there is no scenario in which Princeton would not make the league tournament, official confirmation has to come from the Ivy office itself. Princeton is also tied for first place in the league with Cornell as the only one-loss Ivy teams, followed by 3-2 Penn and 2-2 Harvard. Princeton hosts Harvard this coming Saturday on Senior Day and then travels to Cornell the following weekend in the regular season finale.
The day began when Madalon announced Wyatt's arrival, which came four days early, at the team breakfast. Wyatt joins older sisters Waverly and Whitney.
The enthusiasm of the addition the Princeton Lacrosse family carried over into the game. Dartmouth scored first, three minutes into the game, but that would be it for the Big Green in the first half. Princeton scored the next seven, with two from Mackesy and one each from Jack Ringhofer, Tommy Barnds, Alexander Vardaro, Lukas Stanat (the first of his career high three) and Sean Cameron.
The only drama came in the beginning of the third quarter, when Dartmouth scored twice in the first 1:21 after intermission to make it a 7-3 game. Princeton answered with three of its own, from Saris, Jake Stevens and longstick Michael Bath, and it was a 10-3 Tiger lead with 5:34 left in the quarter. The Big Green didn't get within six after that.
The fourth quarter highlights were an 80-yard shot into an open net on a 10-man ride by defenseman Ben Finlay and a brother-to-brother goal when Billy Barnds scored off a feed from his brother Tommy.
Mackesy's eight points took him to 98 for his career, two away from becoming the 40th player in program history to reach 100. Mackesy, a sophomore, now has at least three goals in every game but one this year, and his season totals are 37 goals and 18 assists.
Saris, who started the first three games before being injured, returned to the field a week ago against Syracuse on the extra man offense. Against Dartmouth he played a little more than half the game, and his five assists and seven points were career bests.
Michael Gianforcaro made 12 saves while allowing five goals. Freshman face-off man Andrew McMeekin won 11 of 23 face-offs and had seven ground balls.
Princeton will be without midfielder Sam English (ruptured spleen against Syracuse) and shortstick defensive midfielder Luc Anderson (broken wrist) for the remainder of the season.
