Women's Rugby Competes at Ivy 7s
April 22, 2023 | Women's Rugby
HANOVER, N.H. - Another tough day at the office for the Princeton Women's Rugby team at the Ivy 7s Championship in Hanover, New Hampshire. Even though the Tigers didn't see a match victory for the day, the team was able to identify their improvements and also celebrate the seniors, Kathryn-Alexa Kennedy and Hadley Clayton. The battle-weary Tigers traveled to Brophy Field with a short roster of 10 players.
The first match was against the Crimson 7s winners, Harvard, which meant that the Tigers had quite the assignment ahead of them. 0-22 at the half, Princeton couldn't match the speed and skill of the Crimson women. The match closed with a score of 0-51.
The second match of the day was against the talented Dartmouth team, with many players finding themselves on the USA Rugby national team rosters or playing professional rugby after their graduation. Strong set-pieces and attacking potential, the Tigers couldn't find their way onto the board. 0-29 to end the first half. Dartmouth doubled their score the second half, ending the game 0-58.
With two difficult games behind them, the Princeton women were focused on the afternoon matchup with Brown, whom the Tigers beat in the 2022 Ivy Championship tournament. The sun came out momentarily for the match, but the wind continued to blow steadily into the second half. The Tigers' defensive efforts were on display with Brown finishing the second half with only two tries in, which were both converted. Closing out the match 0-24.
The day was filled with Tiger fans and alumni supporting from the sideline. The Princeton Men's Club Rugby team brought two sides to the tournament and finished the day with a win each. It was a fun day for the whole Princeton Rugby program!
With competitive teams growing rapidly in the Ivy League, Tigers will have to lean on one another to find their victories ahead. The Rugby program looks forward to PUWRFC and PURFC events filling Reunions weekend, more information to come on that soon! Until then, Go Tigers!
