June 02, 2023 | General, Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Épées Katharine Holmes '17, Kasia Nixon '21 and rising senior Tristan Szapary, rising junior foil Maia Weintraub, and saber Maia Chamberlain '22 have all been selected to represent the U.S. in their respective weapons at the upcoming Pan-American Senior Championships and FIE Fencing World Championships, USA Fencing has announced.
Of the 24 fencers selected across the three weapons and between the men's and women's teams, 21 are in or are college alumni, and Princeton's five current and alumni fencers are the most of any college in the group.
All five fencers were or have been well accoladed during their Tiger careers.
Holmes was a four-time All-American and had two top-three finishes at the NCAA Championships, ending her career with a second-place individual finish in 2017 after starting her career by helping Princeton to the combined men's/women's team title and finishing third individually. Nixon won the 2018 NCAA épée title, and Szapary earned his first All-American honor this past season.
Weintraub and Chamberlain were both NCAA champions, Weintraub making her NCAA debut with the 2022 foil title and following it up with a second All-American honor this past season, and Chamberlain won the 2018 saber title during a three-time All-American career.
Along with the fencers representing Team USA, newly graduated Mohamed Hamza '23 will represent Egypt at the World Championships. Hamza was a three-time All-American at Princeton.
The Pan-American Senior Championships are set for June 14-21 in Lima, Peru, and the 2023 FIE Fencing World Championships will be held July 22-30 in Milan, Italy.
