Schreiber Makes History With Another MVP Award
September 03, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Tom Schreiber's eventual plaque for the Hall of Fame now has another major achievement to be engraved.
Schreiber, a 2014 Princeton grad, was named the winner of the Premier Lacrosse League's Jim Brown Most Valuable Player Award Saturday night. His win makes him the first player ever to be a three-time MVP between the two outdoor professional leagues, the PLL and Major League Lacrosse.
In addition, Schreiber was named the winner of the Brendan Looney Leadership Award, which is hardly a surprise to anyone who has ever been his teammate, opponent or fan. His third award of the evening was the Gait Brothers Midfielder of the Year Award, keeping alive a streak that has seen only Princeton alums — specifically Schreiber and Zach Currier, who was a finalist this year again — win the award since the league's inception.
Schreiber, who led the Archers to the top seed and a bye in the playoffs, finished the regular season with 37 points, which was seven more than any other league midfielder, on 16 goals (two two-pointers) and 17 assists.
Currier finished the year with five goals, nine assists, 50 ground balls and seven caused turnovers, numbers no other player in the league could match. Currier and his Waterdogs teammate Michael Sowers (15G, 15A, 30 points) are the third seed in the playoffs and will play the sixth-seeded Whipsnakes in the quarterfinals on Labor Day at 2:20 on ESPN+ as the team chases its second-straight PLL title.
The Cannons, who feature two Princeton coaches with two-point specialist Chris Aslanian and offensive coordinator Jim Mitchell, are the No. 2 seed and will play the Atlas Monday at 5, with a possible matchup with the Waterdogs in the semifinals. The Cannons-Atlas game can be seen on ESPN2 and ESPN+.
The other game in the quarterfinals will match the fourth-seeded Redwoods and fifth-seeded Chaos, with the winner to play the Archers in the semifinal. The quarterfinal round will be held at Gilette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
The Archers are coached by former Tiger head coach Chris Bates and feature another Tiger alum, veteran midfielder Ryan Ambler. The semifinals will be held Sept. 10 at Hofstra, and the championship game will be Sept. 24 at Suburu Park in Chester, Pa.
