Men's Hockey Downed By #16/17 New Hampshire
January 05, 2024 | Men's Ice Hockey
A quick start from No. 16/17 New Hampshire was too much for Princeton to overcome in a 5-2 loss to the Wildcats at the Whittemore Center.
Â
Ian Murphy and Kai Daniells each had power-play goals for the Tigers, Arthur Smith made 30 saves.
Â
The Wildcats hopped out to a 2-0 lead just past the midway mark of the first period, scoring twice in a span of 1:04 to break open the game.
Â
Ryan Conmy scored first 9:55 into the period, taking a turnover and breaking down the right wing and taking a shot which deflected off a Princeton defender's stick and over Smith's shoulder.
Â
Just over a minute later, Marty Lavins extended the UNH lead with a snap shot from the top of the left circle which went through a diving Princeton defender and into the top corner to make it 2-0 UNH.
Â
The Wildcats increased their lead to 3-0 just before the midway mark of the second period when Morgan Winters one-timed in the rebound of a Marty Lavins shot 9:14 into the middle frame.
Â
Ian Murphy got the Tigers on the board with 4:00 left in the second period, wiring home a one-timer following a no-look pass from David Jacobs on the power play to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Â
New Hampshire would net another goal before the end of the second period, Cy LeClerc sneaking free down the right wing and sending a one-timer top corner with 0:48 remaining in the period.
Â
Kai Daniells would net a second powerplay goal for Princeton, uncorking a wrister that went off the crossbar and in just before a UNH penalty expired with 12:00 left in the third period, assists going to Tyler Rubin and Adam Robbins.
Â
The two teams will finish off the series with a 4 p.m. faceoff at the Whittemore Center on January 6.
