Princeton Athletics Launches Inaugural Tigers Together Inclusive Excellence Series
October 15, 2024 | Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
In September Princeton Athletics launched its inaugural Tigers Together Inclusive Excellence Series, a groundbreaking initiative designed to foster dialogue, connection, and collaboration among community leaders, students, and faculty from Trenton and Philadelphia. The event united diverse groups, including members of the Black Student-Athlete Collective (BSAC) and Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) like The Black Employee Network (BEN) and the Network of African American Men (NAAMA), along with local college students and staff from The College of New Jersey, Rider University, Rutgers, NJIT, Montclair, Temple, and Kean University.
The series aimed to translate the three E's of DEI—education, Engagement, and Empowerment—into concrete actions over two impactful days.
The weekend began with Bridging Legacies: The Intersections of Paul Robeson, Hip Hop, and DEI. Professor Keith Harrison, the keynote speaker, examined the principles of diversity, equity,
and inclusion through the lenses of hip-hop, sports, and Paul Robeson's enduring legacy. This engaging discussion not only illuminated DEI concepts but also connected attendees to cultural touchstones, highlighting the intersectionality of identity and the importance of inclusive practices.
Following Bridging Legacies, the evening transitioned to the Jadwin Lobby for the Hip Hop Legacy Party: A Celebration of Culture, Dance, and Expression. Engagement resonated throughout the weekend, emphasized by vibrant music and cultural expressions that cultivated a sense of community among attendees. Participants shared their stories and experiences, fostering an environment ripe for collaboration and connection. The palpable energy in the room reflected a collective commitment to creating a more inclusive environment both on and off campus. The event featured hip-hop music and spoken word performances by the Princeton Club songline and special guest poet Lexx Unapologetically, whose powerful words energized the crowd.
The activities concluded with a victory for Princeton Football over Howard, adding a celebratory note to an already impactful event. The Tigers Together Inclusive Excellence Series displayed strength of community and relationships, both in athletics and in our shared commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
As the Associate Athletic Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Tigers Together Inclusive Excellence Series. The collaboration and energy displayed over the weekend were truly inspiring, and we look forward to continuing this vital work together. As we move forward, let's remain dedicated to building a more inclusive future for all.
