BIg Second Half Leads Columbia Past Princeton In Ivy Opener For Both

Princeton put together a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown march after taking the opening kickoff, only to see Columbia explode in the second half with touchdowns on four straight possessions, the result of which was a 34-17 Lions win in the Ivy League opener for both.

Princeton's opening possession was a thing of beauty, with seven passes mixed with five runs, and when John Volker took it the final 12 yards on the ground, it was quickly 7-0 Tigers. The first half wouldn't see another touchdown, though there were three field goals, two by Columbia and one by the Tigers, which came from 42 yards away from Jeffrey Sexton on the final play before intermission.

Added all up, and it was a 10-6 Princeton lead at the break. The second half, though, would bear almost no resemblance to the first 30 minutes.

Columbia suddenly began to have great success offensively, scoring on drives of 53, 67, 85 and 59 yards. Even another 75-yard Princeton march, which ended with a TD pass from Blaine Hipa to AJ Barber to make it 20-17 Columbia in the first minute of the fourth quarter, wasn't enough to change the momentum.

Barber had a big day for Princeton, with seven catches for 74 yards and the TD, as well as a 28-yard run on his only carry of the day. Hipa, who missed last week's win over Howard, came back to complete 16 of 28 for 164 yards, while Volker led the team with 61 yards on 12 carries.

Defensively, Marcus Scarano had a team-best eight tackles, and Chase Christopher had eight.

Princeton plays its final non-league game this coming Saturday at Mercer. The game in Macon, Ga., will be the first ever between the teams.
