Men's Lacrosse Update: Ivy Tournament, Record Watch
April 15, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse
The Princeton men's lacrosse team has two regular season games remaining, this Saturday at home against Penn and then April 27 at Yale. The Ivy League tournament is the weekend after that, and Princeton has all kinds of scenarios to get into the event, which the Tigers won a year ago.
Princeton is now 2-2 in the league and alone in fourth place. Weirdly, there are ways Princeton can be in the Ivy tournament at 2-4 and not in the Ivy tournament at 3-3. For instances, should Princeton be 3-3 and in a tie with only Brown for fourth, then Princeton would not reach the tournament based on Brown's head-to-head win this past weekend. Should Princeton end up in a tie at 2-4 with Harvard and Brown, then the Tigers could possibly get the tiebreaker on goal-differential, based on the results of the Harvard-Brown game still to be played.
As for the Princeton record book, there are several players who have been etching their names into it. When Tucker Wade scored twice against Brown, it gave him 10 for the season, joining classmates Nate Kabiri and Colin Burns in double figures, making them the fourth trio of Princeton freshman to do so in the same season. It was done first by, not shockingly, Jon Hess, Jesse Hubbard and Chris Massey in 1995, as well as Whitney Hayes, Scott Sowanick and Peter Trombino in 2004 and Tommy Davis, Mark Kovler and Josh Lesko in 2006.
Kabiri has 40 points on the year (27G, 13A), which makes him the fifth Princeton freshman to reach that mark. He trails Michael Sowers (82), Kevin Lowe (55), Ryan Boyle (53) and Coulter Mackesy (43). Kabiri is also one goal away from moving into a three-way tie for second among freshman goal scorers, trailing only Sowers, who had 41. Burns is one goal away from 20, which would make Kabiri and Burns the second pair of freshmen to reach at least 20 (Hubbard had 23 and Massey had 21 in 1995).
Mackesy now has 165 career points, leaving him 12th all-time at Princeton, nine away from Wick Sollers for 11th. Mackesy also has 110 career goals, which is ninth-best, four away from Sollers.
The Princeton-Penn game starts at 5 Saturday on Sherrerd Field. Tickets can be purchased HERE.
