Members of the men's and women's fencing team traveled to Antheil Elementary School in Ewing, N.J., to introduce second- through fourth-graders who are a part of the i-Ready club to the sport of fencing. The i-Ready club focuses on bringing students together from second through fifth grade through i-Ready learning, a collection of instructional resources that help students learn and grow by providing rigorous and motivating reading and mathematics digital instruction that engages students of all levels and backgrounds and motivates students to persist in skill building.
The event started with student-athletes providing their names and majors with Ryan Lee and Ronald Anglade introducing the fundamental skills of fencing. Woser Prossor and Ethan Um sparred with one another as Ryan, Ronald, Jessica Lin, and Judy Gao explained to Antheil's students how each fencer received points. After the sparring, Antheil students were split into into three groups as each Princeton fencer put on a small clinic.
Princeton fencer Ryan Lee:
"Teaching the kids was an incredible experience and I felt really glad to see them be so receptive towards fencing. It's encouraging to see that spreading the sport is possible at all levels and ages. Thank you Antheil students and teachers for the amazing experience."
Princeton fencer Jessica Lin:
"I'm glad that our team got to engage with the community more, especially with a younger audience, as it reminds me of how exciting the novelty of the sport can be when you first start out. It was great to see the kids having fun and getting active, and I'm happy to show fencing to a wider audience because fencing is what brought me to Princeton, so I hope to have shown the kids and their parents that fencing can do the same for them, if not take them further."
Antheil teacher Amanda Gager:
"We were so grateful to have the Princeton fencing team visit Antheil Elementary School's iReady club this May. They put on an enlightening and engaging demonstration that introduced the second, third, fourth and fifth graders to a sport they may not have been exposed to previously. The students particularly loved the hands-on experience they were able to have trying out the fencing moves that were taught. It was an invaluable experience, showcasing the grace, skill, and strategy involved in fencing."
