Princeton Draws Maryland In NCAA Opener
May 05, 2024 | Men's Lacrosse
The Princeton men's lacrosse team sprinted off of its buses and made its way to the Princeton Stadium football meeting room just as the NCAA Selection Show began Sunday night. The Tigers had just made the long ride back home after winning the Ivy League tournament championship and NCAA tournament bid with an 18-11 win over Penn at Cornell, and now it was time to find out where and when the team would be playing.
The answer? Maryland, at Maryland. Face-off for the game between the Tigers and Terrapins will be at 7:30 Saturday night.
Princeton is the only Ivy League team in this year's tournament. It's also the third straight year Princeton has reached the NCAAs.
Maryland is the seventh seed in the tournament, while Princeton is unseeded. The Terps defeated Princeton 13-7 back on Feb. 24, also at Maryland.
"We'll wake up tomorrow and only 17 teams will still be playing college lacrosse," Princeton head coach Matt Madalon said.
The winner of the Princeton-Maryland game will play the winner of the game between No. 2 seed Duke and unseeded Utah in the quarterfinals. The complete bracket is:
No. 1 Notre Dame vs. Sacred Heart/Albany winner
No. 8 Georgetown vs. Penn State
No. 4 Syracuse vs. Towson
No. 5 Denver vs. Michigan
No. 3 Johns Hopkins vs. Lehigh
No. 6 Virginia vs. St. Joe's
No. 2 Duke vs. Utah
No. 7 Maryland vs. Princeton
In addition to the current Tigers, all nine of Princeton's alumni graduate transfers also reached the NCAA tournament: Sam English and Jake Stevens at Syracuse; Alexander Vardaro at Georgetown; Cathal Roberts, Beau Pederson and Christian Ronda at Michigan, Jacob Stoebner at Johns Hopkins; Alex Slusher and Griffin Rakower at Duke.
"We're thrilled for this year's team," Madalon says. "And we're also very happy and proud of our alumni Tigers."
